NWSL To Hold Supplemental Draft February 7

The National Women's Soccer League announced Thursday they will conduct a six-round supplemental draft via conference call from US Soccer headquarters in Chicago February 7, allowing the league's eight franchises to continue to build their inaugural season rosters.

Clubs began building those rosters January 9, when each team were allocated three US Women's National Team players, except for the Western New York Flash, who were allocated two, and two each from the national team of Mexico and Canada.

On January 18, the league held its inaugural College Draft in Indianapolis and each team added four players, growing rosters to ten or 11 players.

A two-week period that allowed teams to sign four, or, in the case of the Chicago Red Stars, Seattle Reign, Washington Spirit and Western New York Flash due to unforeseen absences or late season arrivals of allocated players, five additional players began after the draft and ends Thursday, bringing rosters to a maximum of 15 players each.

Each team will now submit a list of between eight and ten players, combining domestic and international players, for eligibility into the Supplemental Draft, with teams being able to add two more international players in addition to ones already allocated.

Finally, after next Thursday's Supplemental Draft, teams can sign up to four Discovery Players and secure the rights to three of them heading into preseason training camps.

Discovery Players can be those who were eligible for, but not selected during, next week's Supplemental Draft.

Rights to those players will be given to a team on a "date of submission priority" basis and, if two teams submit the same player for this process, the team that submitted the name first will be able to sign that player.

When the league's regular season begins, teams will be allowed to carry 18-20 players.

Stars Bulk Up For 2013 NASL Seasons With Major Signings

The Minnesota Stars announced six major player moves designed to make them the favorite to hoist the Soccer Bowl championship for their second time in 2013 after winning the 2011 title, then losing in the 2012 championship game to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

The team signed the league's first two Most Valuable Players, forwards Etienne Barbara and Pablo Campos (both to three-year deals), the 2012 NASL Golden Glove in goalkeeper Daryl Sattler (signed to a three-year deal), and midfielders Bryan Arguez (two-year deal) and Aaron Pitchkolan (two-year deal), and re-signed forward Simone Bracalello (two-year deal).

Barbara and Campos, teammates with the Carolina RailHawks in 2011 and each signed for three seasons with Minnesota, combined for 35 goals, leading them to the league's regular season championship and to the semifinals of the Soccer Bowl playoffs.

Barbara moved last season to Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps, while Campos joined the NASL's lone expansion franchise last season, the San Antonio Scorpions, where he scored a league-high 21 goals and led the team to the regular season title.

Sattler had an 0.79 goals against average and 13 shutouts in 24 games with the Scorpions last season. He began his NASL career with Tampa Bay in 2010, but a knee injury ended his 2011 season there prematurely.

Pitchkolan also spent 2012 with the Scorpions and has played for MLS' FC Dallas and San Jose Earthquakes, as well as the Rochester Rhinos and Puerto Rico Islanders in NASL.

Bracalello, in his fourth season with the Stars, has scored 20 goals in his first three seasons, the most in team history.

Minnesota opens the league's first split-season schedule April 6 at the Metrodome against the Scorpions, then, after five games there, will play the rest of the 2013 season's home games at the National Sports Center in Blaine, MN.
