Red Bulls Promote Petke To Head Coach

Since going outside the organization to find a new head coach proved fruitless, Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls announced Thursday they have promoted assistant coach and former defender Mike Petke to the position after serving two seasons under former coach Hans Backe.

Petke spent 13 seasons in MLS as a player with two stints at the Red Bulls -- 1998-02 and 2008-10.

He holds club records for games played with 169 league games (196 over all competitions), games started (158 regular season) and minutes played (14,160 regular season minutes).
