Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids announced the signing Friday of Horizon High School and Rapids Academy player Dillon Serna as their third Homegrown Player on the roster, joining Davy Armstrong (Rangeview High School) and Shane O'Neill (Fairview High School).
Serna joined the academy in 2009, spent time playing for the US U-17 National Team and was recently called up to training camp with the US U-20 National Team.
A freshman this past season at Akron, he started 21 of 22 games, played either defender, midfielder or forward, and scored two goals and eight assists.
The Zips were ranked the number one team in the country before being upset at the NCAA College Cup tournament.
Serna was ranked by several publications as the country's top college freshman.
He also started three of seven games for the Rapids' MLS Reserve League franchise.
