Whitecaps Agree To Future Designated Player Signing

Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps announced Thursday Scotland midfielder Barry Robson will join the team in July on a free transfer from Middlesbrough of the English Championship and will become their second Designated Player.

At Vancouver, he will reunite with current assistant coach Paul Ritchie, who played with him for three seasons (2004-06) at Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League.

Robson also played for Celtic in the UEFA Champions League, leading them to the 2008 Scottish Premier League championship and the 2009 Scottish League Cup title.

He also has represented 16 times on their national team.

Ching Returned To Dynamo In Trade With Impact

Major League Soccer's Montreal Impact, debuting this season, announced Thursday they have traded disgruntled forward Brian Ching back to the Houston Dynamo in return for a conditional first-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Ching was originally left unprotected by Houston during the 2012 MLS Expansion Draft and threatened to retire if the Impact selected him, which they did and he subsequently followed through with his plan. He later changed his mind and had been getting along well with Impact teammates.

Monday, however, Ching asked for -- and was granted -- a leave of absence for "personal reasons", but those reasons were he wanted to travel to Houston to personally renegotiate his return.

Ching will take a pay cut to play for the defending Eastern Conference champions, but, according to the Houston Chronicle Thursday, has been guaranteed a front office job when he truly retires, possibly as early as 2013.
