MLS Hands Out $16K In Fines Friday

It was not a good day to be in trouble with Major League Soccer Friday, as the league issued $16,000 in fines to one player and two franchises.

The one player was DC United forward Charlie Davies, who received a $1,000 fine by the league's Disciplinary Committee for intentionally taking a dive in front of a referee in the 83rd minute of their game against Real Salt Lake for the purpose of having an opponent received a card.

League executive vice president Nelson Rodriguez said Daves "intentionally deceived the officials and gained an unfair advantage which directly impacted the game" and said such a move "tarnishes the image of the League, is detrimental to the game and will not be tolerated."

Teams were warned in the offseason referees would not tolerate any player delaying a game with any phony attempt to be injured by another player.

In the second case, the Los Angeles Galaxy was fined $5,000 for violating the league's policy of issuing accurate injury reports to them and opposing teams.

MLS requires teams to submit twice-weekly reports on injured players and be as accurate as possible with all information, but the league said the Galaxy deliberately left David Beckham's name off their injury report ahead of Saturday's game against the defending league champion Colorado Rapids, even though they know he will not play because of back spasms.

Finally, the New York Red Bulls were fined $10,000 for public comments made Monday by general manager and sporting director Erik Soler about the officiating in a 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers last Sunday at JELD-WEN Field.

In his comment, he called a red card given to Theirry Henry "inexplicable" and that the officiating was "below the standards of what is required for a MLS match and completely unacceptable."
