The Los Angeles Galaxy, currently the best team in Major League Soccer at 14-3-10 with 52 points and leading the Western Conference standings, could become the first team to clinch one of the league's ten postseason berths Friday when they host the defending MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.
The league expanded the playoff field from eight to ten teams, starting this season -- the top three teams in each conference plus the next four teams with the best records, regardless of conference, make the playoffs this season.
However, if the Galaxy loses or play the Rapids to a draw, Los Angeles can still earn the spot if Chivas USA (hosting DC United), the New York Red Bulls (hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps) and the Portland Timbers (at the Philadelphia Union) all lose their games Saturday.
