Galaxy Clinch MLS Playoff Berth With 1-0 Victory Over Defending Champ Rapids

Landon Donovan was assisted by Sean Franklin on a 36th minute goal as the host Los Angeles Galaxy became the first team to clinch a 2011 Major League Soccer playoff berth -- one of ten available this season -- in a 1-0 victory over the defending league champion Colorado Rapids Friday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

The Galaxy, the defending Western Conference regular season and Supporters Shield champion, have the league's best record at 15-3-10 with 55 points, while the Rapids are in fifth place in the conference at 10-8-11 with 41 points.

Both teams will take a break from league business Tuesday to continue competing in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League -- the Galaxy at Mexico's Morelia in Group A play, the Rapids at Brazil's Santos Laguna in Group B play.

Next Saturday, Los Angeles hosts the worst team in the league and Western Conference, the Vancouver Whitecaps, while the Rapids travel to BMO Field to face Toronto FC.
