The new Women's Professional Soccer champion Western New York Flash, the first expansion team to win the league championship in its first season, will have to defend their title next season without team captain and midfielder Caroline Seger as the Flash announced Thursday she has signed a two-year deal to play in Sweden for Tyreso.
Seger, who has five goals and an assist in 12 games this season, 10 of them starts, could have had the team pick up her option for the 2012 season, but Seger also had an out clause in her former contract, allowing her to sign with another team, as long as the team wasn't in WPS.
Additionally, the Flash announced they have terminated the contract of Brazilian midfielder Maurine.
