Fans Give Whitecap Players Sweep In Weekly Awards; Signs Mitchell

Fans selected Vancouver Whitecaps forward David Chuimiento and goakeeper Joe Cannon as winner of Major League Soccer's Week 26 AT&T Goal of the Week and league Save of the Week awards in results announced Friday.

Chuimiento won his award with 64 percent of the vote over second-place Roger Torres of the Philadelphia Union at 14 percent.

The Union's Sebastien Le Toux and Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes finished tied for third with eight percent each and Andres Mendoza of the Columbus Crew was last at six percent.

Cannon garnered 46.72 percent of the vote to easily outdistance Matt Pickens of the Colorado Rapids (24.15 percent), Bouna Coundoul of the New York Red Bulls (13.56 percent), Kevin Hartman of FC Dallas (12.42 percent) and Jon Busch of the San Jose Earthquakes (3.15 percent).

The Whitecaps, the league's worst team this season, also announced Thursday they have signed Trinidad & Tobago defender Carlyle Mitchell to a contract before Thursday's 2 p.m. Eastern time deadline to freeze rosters for the rest of the season.

In 2009, Mitchell, then with Joe Public FC in the Trinidad & Tobago League, led the to the league championship, the Trinidad & Tobago Cup, the Trinidad & Tobago Classic and Trinidad & Tobago Pro Bowl titles.
