The Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League announced Wednesday they have re-signed reigning league Most Valuable Player Byron Alvarez and First Team All-League star Leo Gibson for the 2011-12 season.
Alvarez, the team's captain last season, led the Comets to the MISL Playoff Semifinals with 80 points and 33 goals and also led the league in hat tricks with five and tied for the league lead in game-winning goals with five.
He also had the longest goal scoring (nine games) and point scoring (15 games) streaks in the league last season.
During an 18-12 win March 6, 2011 against the now-defunct Chicago Riot, he had nine points on four two-point goals and an assist, with one of the goals being the game-winning goal.
Alvarez was also named to the All-MISL First Team for 2010-11.
Gibson led the Comets with 13 assists and was tied for third in the league in that category. He was third on the team in scoring with 45 points and had the second-longest goal scoring streak behind Alvarez at eight games, as well as leading the team and finishing tied for sixth in the league in blocks with 20.
In a November 21, 2010 12-11 comeback victory over the Omaha Vipers, who left the MISL to join the Professional Arena Soccer League for the 2011-12 season, Gibson scored a two-point and assisted on three others and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Month.
The Comets open the new MISL season on the road November 3 against the revived Wichita Wings at Hartman Arena, then have their home opener the next night against Wichita at the Independence Events Center.
