WPS Announces Winners Of 2011 Season Individual Awards

After a week of voting done with fans, media, coaches and players, Women's Professional Soccer Wednesday announced the winners of its 2011 individual postseason awards:

COACH OF THE YEAR - Paul Riley, Philadelphia Independence
- Had won the award last season
- Led team to a 11-4-3 record, including a seven-game winning streak midway through the season

US SOCCER FEDERATION ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Christen Press, magicJack.com
- Was second on the team in goals with eight, including the first hat trick by a rookie player in league history June 30

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR - Whitney Ergen, Western New York Flash
- Led team to 13-2-2 record
- Started and played in all 90 minutes of 17 out of 18 games

US COAST GUARD GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR - Ashlyn Harris, Western NY Flash
- One of four goalkeepers this season to play every minute of all 18 league games
- Led the league in goals against average at 1.00

MICHELLE AKERS PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Veronica Boquete, Philadelphia Independence
- Had five goals and four assists in 11 games with Philadelphia with four of the five goals being game-winning goal

CITI SPORTSWOMEN OF THE YEAR - Nikki Krzysik, Philadelphia Independence.
