For the first time since May 1 against FC Dallas, the Los Angeles Galaxy, the best team in the league and the Western Conference at 12-2-9 with 45 points, did something they hadn't done -- lost!
After 14 games, the Galaxy came into JELD-WEN Field in Portland, OR unprepared for what the Portland Timbers would throw at them and it showed in a 3-0 upset victory.
Mike Chabala opened the game for Portland with a 26th minute goal from Darlington Nagbe and the Timbers doubled the lead seven minutes later when Diego Chara and Kenny Cooper teamed to assist Jorge Perlaza on a goal.
Eric Brunner further chopped away at the lead in the 68th minute with help from Sal Zizzo.
The Galaxy will play host to FC Dallas this Saturday at The Home Depot Center.
Portland, in eighth place in the conference standings at 6-10-4 with 22 points, meets the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.
