The Vancouver Whitecaps, the worst team in Major League Soccer this season, announced Tuesday Martin Rennie, currently head coach of the North American Soccer League-leading Carolina RailHawks, will take over for current interin head coach Tom Soehn for the 2012 MLS season, allowing Soehn to return to his job as director of soccer operations.
Soehn replaced inaugural head coach Teitur Thordarson, who was fired in May.
Rennis was a two-time Coach of the Year in the former USL Second Division with the Cleveland City Stars, who won the league's 2008 championship, and led the RailHawks to the 2010 USSF Division 2 Pro League championship.
