Brian Mullin scored his first goal of the season off a Wells Thompson assist in the 55th minute and Sanna Nyassi fed a pass to Omar Cummings for his third goal of 2011 in the 79th minute as the defending Major League Soccer champion Colorado Rapids shut out the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew 2-0 Friday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO for their fourth win in their last six games.
The Rapids are currently 9-6-10 with 37 points and in fourth place in the Western Conference, three points behind the Seattle Sounders (10-5-8, 38) for sole possession of third place in the standings. Colorado next travels to Buck Shaw Stadium next Saturday to play the San Jose Earthquakes.
Columbus (9-7-7, 34 points) maintains a two-point lead over the Philadelphia Union (8-5-8, 32 points) in the Eastern standings, but the Union hosts the Houston Dynamo Saturday. The Crew will host the New England Revolution at Crew Stadium next Saturday.
