Nielsen Announces Retirement, Joins Chivas USA As Assistant Coach

Chivas USA defender Jimmy Nielsen announced Thursday his retirement from professional soccer as a player to become an assistant coach with his current MLS employer.

Nieslen played in 290 regular season games, 275 of which he started, with the San Jose Clash (1996-99), San Jose Earthquakes (1999-2002), Kansas City Wizards, now Sporting Kansas City (2003-2010) and Chivas (2011), and had 20 goals and 10 assists in his career.

He was a five-time MLS All-Starm a four-time Best XI nominee, and the league's 2006 Defender of the Year.

Nielsen also played 28 games for the US Men's National Team, scoring one goal.
