McManus Signs With RailHawks For Rest Of Season

The league-leading Carolina RailHawks of the North American Soccer League announced the signing Friday of veteran midfielder Tony McManus for the rest of the season and he could play Saturday when they face the Puerto Rico Islanders on the road.

McManus spent the last two seasons with the Portland Timbers in the USL First Division (2009) and the USSF Division 2 Pro League (2010) before the team moved to Major League Soccer this season.

In 51 games for the Timbers over that time, he scored one goal and led the team to the 2009 USL-1 Commissioner's Cup for having the best regular season record.

He played collegiately at Alabama-Birmingham, where, as a senior in 2003, was named the Conference USA Defender of the Year and was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America selection.

Drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire, McManus played three seasons in USL-1 for the Atlantia Silverbacks (2005-08), where he scored seven goals in 156 games and led them to the 2007 USL-1 Championship Final.
