Getting Above Mendoza Line (Or Spot) Helps Crew Edge Union

Andres Mendoza's penalty kick in the 50th minute as the game-winner as Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew edged the Philadelphia Union 2-1 Saturday at Crew Stadium for their fourth win in their last five games.

Emilio Renteria scored in the 37th minute for Columbus to open the scoring, which Philadelphia's Veljko Paunovic countered with a leveling goal in the 42nd minute.

Philadelphia is now winless in its last five games.

The Crew are 11-7-7 with 40 points to lead the conference and head to CenturyLink Field this Saturday to face the Seattle Sounders.

Philadelphia is in third place in a tight conference at 8-6-10 with 34 points. The Union will host the Seattle Sounders next Sunday.
