Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris deflected a shot from Laura Del Rio in the fifth round of a penalty kick shootout as the host Western New York Flash defeated the two-time league championship runner-up Philadelphia Independence 5-4 Saturday at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, NY to become the 2011 Women's Professional Soccer champion, the first team to do so as an expansion team.
The game ended in a regulation tie as, after a scoreless first half highlighted by a squirrel that delayed play after team officials tried to coax it off the pitch, as Christine Sinclair posted a 64th minute goal for the Flash and Amy Rodriguez set up overtime with an 87th minute goal.
