USWNT Makes FIFA WWC Final For First Time Since '99, Beat France 3-1, Play Japan For Title

Lauren Cheney scored a ninth minute goal off Heather O'Reilly's assist, then assisted on Abby Wambach's game-winning goal in thr 79th minute as the US Women's National Team advanced to Sunday's championship game of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first since they won the inaugural event in 1999 with a 3-1 victory Wednesday at Borussia Park in Moenchengladbach, Germany.

Sonia Bompastor tied the game at 1-1 for France in the 55th minute off a Sandrine Soubeyrand assist.

The US is 12-0-1 all-time against France and Wambach's goal tied her with Michelle Akers, a member of the '99 championship team, for most goals in the tournament by a USWNT player with 12.

The US will next face Japan, who the US swept in a two-game series by identical 2-0 scores May 14 and 18 at Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH and WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC, in the championship game in Frankfurt Sunday.
