For the first time in 18 games, the US Women's National Team lost a FIFA Women's World Cup group stage game as Sweden won their first-ever group title, taking a 2-1 victory to claim the Group C crown Wednesday in Wolfsburg, Germany.
Sweden built a 2-0 lead in the first half on a penalty kick by Lisa Dahlkvist in the 16th minute and a free kick from Nilla Fischer in the 35th minute for their first win against the US in four WWC matches.
Abby Wambach scored the US's lone goal in the 67th minute off a Lauren Cheney assist.
The US will now face heavily favored Brazil in the quarterfinals Sunday morning (US Eastern time) in Dresden, Germany.
