US-Japan FIFA Women's World Cup Final Makes Soccer Viewing History

ESPN's coveage of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup championship game between the US and Japan Sunday in Frankfurt, Germany set programming records for the sport on American television, ESPN announced Monday.

The game earned a 7.4 rating and an audience of 13.458 million, the largest numbers since a 4.0 rating and 6.160 million viewers for the US-Algeria group stage game played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

It also was ESPN's second-most-watched daytime game broadcast in any sport since the 2011 Rose Bowl, which had 20.557 million viewers.

It was also the sixth-most-watched soccer game -- men's or women's -- in US television history.
