Toronto FC Continues Revamping Of Team; Tchani To Crew For Iro, Griffit

In their third major transaction in the last few weeks, Major League Soccer's Toronto FC announced Friday they traded midfielder Tony Tchani to the Columbus Crew in exchange for defender Andy Iro and midfielder Leandre Griffit.

Tchani, the second overall pick of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls, appeared in 27 games, starting 10, for the Red Bulls last season and had a goal and three assists. In 2011, he started one of two games before being traded to Toronto in the deal that brought Dwayne De Rosario to the Red Bulls.

At Toronto, Tchani had a goal over 13 starts this season.

Tchani led the University of Virginia to the 2009 NCAA Men's College Cup title, among other accomplishments.

Iro, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 SuperDraft, played his entire career with Columbus until the trade, scoring five career goals.

He was a member of their 2008 MLS Cup championship team and their 2008 and 2009 MLS Supporters Shield teams.

Iro came to MLS from the University of California-Santa Barbara, where he led them to the 2006 NCAA Men's College Cup championship.

Griffit played two seasons in Columbus after coming to MLS following playing for teams in France, Sweden and England.

He tried out with MLS' Houston Dynamo but signed with Crew in April 2010.

On June 29, Toronto announced the signings of Torsten Frings and Danny Koevermans as the newest Designated Players.

Thursday, in separate trades, Toronto acquired midfielder Terry Dunfield from the worst team in the league, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and midfielder Ryan Johnson from the San Jose Earthquakes.
