Major League Soccer's Toronto FC began a process of revitalizing the franchise for the remainder of the season and beyond Thursday by making two important trades.
In the first, Toronto traded forward Alan Gordon, defender Nana Attakora and midfielder Jacob Peterson to the San Jose Earthquakes in return for forward/midfielder Ryan Johnson, allocation money, and an international roster spot.
Johnson has played in 99 regular season games for San Jose since joining the team in 2008 and has scored 17 goals and 13 assists. He also scored five goals for 13 points for Jamaica's Men's National Team.
Gordon will be with his fourth career MLS team after stops with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Chivas USA and Toronto, scoring 21 goals and 16 assists in 116 regualr season games, including four goals in eight games with Toronto in 2011.
Attakora, a two-time Canadian U-20 Men's National Team Player of the Year, played in 56 games with Toronto over five seasons but is currentl injured.
Peterson has scored nine goals and eight assists over six MLS seasons.
In the second move of the day, Toronto traded allocation money and future considerations to the last-place-in-the-Western-Conference-and-worst-in-MLS Vancouver Whitecaps for midfielder Terry Dunfield.
Dinfield has scored a goal and assisted on three others in 12 games this season with Vancouver and had a goal over four starts in the recent 2011 Nutrilite Canadian Championship, which Toronto won to earn a berth in the qualifying round of the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League.
He also scored his first goal for the senior Canadian Men's National Team against Ecuador last month and has played six games overall for the team.
