Pair By Plata Leads Toronto FC To First Leg Win Over Real Esteli In CCL Preliminary Stage Play

Joaa Plata scored unassisted goals in the 56th and 72nd minute as Major League Soccer's Toronto FC edged Real Esteli of Nicaragua 2-1 Wednesday at Toronto's BMO Field in the first leg of a two-game series to earn a spot in the field for the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

Alesandro Calero prevented his team being shut out by scoring an unassisted 80th minute strike.

The second game of the series will be played this coming Tuesday in Nicaragua with the aggregate score winner of the series advancing to Group C of the tournament, where they will meet defending CCL champion Monterrey of Mexico, Communicaciones of Guatemala, and the winner of a qualifying series betwen MLS' Seattle Sounders and Panama's San Francisco FC in pool play later this year.
