Sainey Nyassi had a hat trick and assisted on a Wells Thompson goal and Omar Cummings assisted on three goals as the defending Major League Soccer champion Colorado Rapids defeated the New York Red Bulls 4-1 Wednesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO.
Nyassi becomes the first Rapids player since the now-out-for-the-rest-of-the-season Conor Casey did so August 8, 2009 and it's the Rapids second win in their last five games.
Thierry Henry prevented the Red Bulls from being shut out when he was assisted by Juan Agudelo on a 67th minute goal.
The Rapids are 7-6-9 with 30 points and are tied for fourth place in the Western Conference standings with Real Salt Lake (8-3-6). Colorado host the New England Revolution Saturday.
The Red Bulls are 6-5-11 with 29 points and are three points behind the Philadelphia Union (8-4-7, 31) for the lead in the Eastern Conference standings. New York will host FC Dallas Saturday.
