Fredy Montero had goals in the 57th and 74th minute and Osvaldo Alonso's 83rd minute penalty kick was successful as the Seattle Sounders got past the host Portland Timbers 3-2 Sunday in Major League Soccer play from JELD-WEN Field.
Portland thanked Seattle's Jeff Parke for giving them the first lead in the 48th minute after he scored in his own net, but Montero tied the game with his first goal for the Sounders.
Seattle took a 2-1 lead on a Jorge Perlaza for their last lead in the 69th minute.
The Sounders are 9-4-8 with 35 points and are in second place in the Western Conference standings, five points behind the league's and conference's best team, the Los Angeles Galaxy at 10-2-9 with 39 points. Seattle hosts the defending league champion Colorado Rapids Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
Portland, at 6-9-3 with 18 points in its inaugural season in the league, is in eighth place in the conference and will face the Chicago Fire Saturday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.
