Japan Wins FIFA Women's World Cup In PKs Over US

Japan defefeated the United States 3-1 in penalty kicks to claim the title Sunday at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup championship game Sunday at World Cup Stadium in Frankfurt, Germany.

Alex Morgan, who came into the game in the second half as a replacement for Lauren Cheney, had a goal in the 69th minute and assisted on Abby Wambach's latest header, a 104th minute shot that went into the back of the net.

Aya Miyama tied the game at 1-1 for Japan on a solo shot in the 81st minute and Homare Sawa, named the tournament's Golden Boot (top goal scorer) and Golden Ball (most valuable player) winner, forced 30 minutes of extra time with a goal in the 117th minute.

US goalkeeper Hope Solo was named the tournament's most outstanding goalkeeper.
