Independence Takes Over Top Spot In WPS Behind Kai Hat Trick

It may have happened a few days late, but the host Philadelphia Independence, via three unassisted goals by Tasha Kai in the third, 38th and 58th minute, stood their ground and outlasted Sky Blue FC 4-3 at Widener Universty, taking over the lead in Women's Professional Soccer with a 6-2-3 record and 21 points, a point better than the expansion Western New York Flash (6-1-2, 20), who have led the league for most of the season.

Laura del Rio also added an unassisted 79th minute for the Independence, who host the Flash Saturday in a showdown for the league's top rung of the ladder.

Philadelphia inadvertently tied the game in the 26th minute when Leigh Ann Robinson scored in her own team's net, but Alyssa Mautz had an unassisted 30th minute goal for Sky and Casey Nogueira assisted Kendall Fletcher on a goal just before halftime.

Sky Blue, the league's first champion in 2008, is 3-4-3 with 12 points and is tied for fourth place in the single table with the Boston Breakers (3-5-3). Shy hosts magicJack.com Saturday at Yurcak Field at Rutgers University.
