Independence Defeat Flash In Battle Of WPS' Top Two Teams

Tasha Kai had an unassisted eighth minute goal and Sinead Farrelly followed suit in first-half stoppage time as the Philadelphia Independence held on to the top spot in the Women's Professional Soccer standings with a 2-1 win over the expansion Western New York Flash, who led for most of the season, at Philadelphia's Widener University.

Christine Sinclair converted an 81st minute penalty kick to keep the Flash from being shut out.

The Independence, who made it to the league championship game last season in their debut campaign before losing to now-defunct FC Gold Pride, lead the league at 7-2-3 with 24 points and faces the last-place Atlanta Beat at Kennesaw State University Stadium in Kennesaw, GA next Saturday.

Western New York, formerly the 2010 USL W-League champion Buffalo Flash, is in second place at 6-2-2 with 20 point and hosts 1999 WPS champion Sky Blue FC next Sunday at Sahlen's Stadium.
