After completing a two-week trial with the team, the Montreal Impact of the North American Soccer League announced the signing Tuesday of defender Cameron Knowles, who has played sparingly since fracturing a shinbone with the Portland Timbers, then of USL First Division, in an August 12, 2009 game against the Impact at Saputo Stadium.
Knowles began his career in 2004 with the Chicago Fire Premer in the USL Premier Development League, then played four games in 2005 for Real Salt Lake, who drafted him in the Major League Soccer Expansion Draft that season.
He then played 77 games for the Timbers between USL-1 and the USSF Division 2 Pro League from 2007 to 2010.
In 2007, he was one of three finalists for USL-1 Defender of the Year and was named to the All-League First Team, and, in 2008 and 2009, was named to the All-League Second Team.
He also led the Timbers to the USL-1 Commissioner's Cup in 2009 for having the league's best regular season record.
