Blue Heat Keep Highlanders Winless In 2-2 Draw

Edite Fernandes scored in the 34th minute off a Stacey Rodwell assist and Liz Franco tallied the game-tying unassisted goal a minute into second-half stoppage time as the Santa Clarita Blue Heat and the host Victoria Highlanders played to a 2-2 draw in USL W-League play Wednesday at Bear Mountain Stadium.

Janelle Smith opened the scoring for Victoria, winless in its debut season at 0-10-2 and in last place in the Western Conference standings, off a Keara Thompson assist in the 27th minute and Mariel Solsberg had an unassisted 89th minute play.

The Highlanders will hope to end the season with a win in their home and 2011 season finale next Wednesday against the Colorado Force.

The Blue Heat are 7-0-3 with 24 points and is in second place in the conference, four points behind the Vancouver Whitecaps (8-1-3, 27) for first place. Those two meet Friday at Kings Park in Vancouver.
