US Women's National Team midfielder Lindsay Tarpley has been taken off the roster for the upcoming 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee with 15 minutes left in Saturday's 2-0 exhibition win over Japan at Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH.
Head coach Pia Sundhage said Tarpley will miss six to eiight months with the needed surgery and rehabilitation time and she will soon name a replacement to fill her spot on the roster.
Ironically, Tarpley tore the same ligament near the end of the 2009 Women's Professional Soccer season while playing for the Chicago Red Stars.
Tarpley was a member of the US' 2004 and 2008 gold medal winning Olympic women's soccer teams.
