Dominic Furness fired off a penalty kick in the 60th minute and Ben Everson assisted on a Ulisses Guillen goal in the 73rd minute as the host West Texas United Sockers edged the Baton Rouge Capitals 2-1 in USL Premier Development League play Thursday at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland, TX.
Steven Morris scored an unassisted goal for Baton Rouge in the 78th minute to avoid a shutout.
West Texas, at 3-2-0 with nine points, is four behind the Chivas El Paso Patriots (4-1-0, 12) for first place in the Southern Conference's Mid-South Division and will host the New Orleans Jesters Saturday.
Baton Rouge would lose its season-opening game and would finish tied for last in the division with the Jesters (same record) and the expansion RGV Grandes (0-3-0, zero), who the Capitals face May 27.
