Former USWNT Forward, Nittany Lion Welsh Joins DC United Women As Player-Assistant Coach

DC United Women of the USL W-League announced Friday former US Women's National Team and Penn State forward Christe Welsh has joined the team as a player-assistant coach.

Welsh, who won the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Award as collegiate women soccer's top player in 2001, had 82 goals and 52 assists in four seasons with the Nittany Lions and was the first woman to be named a four-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American.

She played in 39 games for the US Women's National Team, scoring 20 goals, beginning in 2000.

Welsh led the US U-21 Women's National Team to the 2002 Nordic Cup championship, then returned to the senior team two years later, scoring a goal against Brazil in her first game back.

Welsh also was part of the US' 2005 Algarve Cup team in Portugal, scoring the game-winning goal in the championship game against Germany and being named the tournament's winner of the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals at the event with five.

Welsh will team at United with current USWNT star and Nittany Lion midfielder Christine Nairn, who recently attempted to make the roster for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup team.

The United Women, who replaced the Washington Freedom Futures when that team and their sister Washington Freedom, moved from the area to Fort Lauderdale, FL and have been renamed magicJack FC, open their inaugural W-League season this Wednesday at the New Jersey Wildcats, who they will host in their home opener June 9. Between then, DC will travel June 5 to the New York Magic.
