First Round Of Cascadia Cup Is Draw Between Sounders, Rapids

The Seattle Sounders and the Portland Timbers opened the first game of their season-long Cascadia Cup regional competition with a 1-1 draw in Major League Soccer play Saturday at Qwest Field in Seattle.

The tournament, which will also feature the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps, traditionally determines the best team in the Northwest region.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, Fredy Montero and Roger Levesque teamed to assist Alvaro Fernandez on a 52nd minute goal to put Seattle on top, but the Timbers countered when Jack Jewsbury worked with Mamadou Danso on his 65th minute goal for the tie.

Seattle (3-3-4) and Portland (4-3-1) both share fifth place in the Western Conference standings. The Sounders are now off until May 28 when they host FC Dallas, but Portland returns to action Saturday when they host the Columbus Crew.
