After being down 0-2, the Chicago Fire stormed back to play the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA in one of the last two play-in games for Major League Soccer team to make the 40-team field for the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament, then won a penalty kick shootout 5-4 to win the bid and play for the 14th consecutive season.
Ellis McLoughlin gave the Earthquakes the first half advantage by scoring both goals, but goals by Orr Barouch in the 61st minute and Yameth Cuesta in the 76th minute forced the draw and neither team could gain the advantage again through 30 minutes of overtime.
Daniel Paladini hit the game-winning goal in the penalty kick shootout.
The Fire joins six MLS teams that automatically qualified for the tournament -- the two-time defending champion Seattle Sounders, the Columbus Crew, FC Dallas, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake -- and gets a bye into the third round of play.
The last of MLS' eight spots in the field will be filled Wednesday when Sporting Kansas City hosts the New England Revolution Wednesday at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex in Overland Park, KS.
