Fire, Earthquakes To Face Off May 24 In LHUSOC Play-In Finale

Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and San Jose Earthquakes will meet May 24 at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA in one of two final Play-In Games to make the 40-team field for the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament, the Fire announced Wednesday.

In the other MLS Play-In contest, set for May 25 at Swope Park Training Center in Kansas City, KS, Sporting Kansas City will host the New England Revolution.

The winners of those games will join the league's six automatic qualifiers -- the Columbus Crew, FC Dallas, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake and the two-time defending champion Seattle Sounders -- in making the field and earning byes into the third round of play.

Chicago and San Jose have never met in a qualification game for a spot in the tournament, but Chicago won 4-3 in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie in regulation play and overtime in a main draw match July 22, 1998 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
