Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, then assisted on a Chad Barrett goal four minutes later as the host Los Angeles Galaxy handed Major League Soccer's worst team in 2011, Sporting Kansas City, a 4-1 beatdown Saturday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.
Barrett also assisted Juan Pablo Angel's 64th minute goal for the Galaxy and David Beckham had his first goal of the season, an unassisted blast in the 67th minute, in the win, their first four-goal game of the season.
Even Kansas City's goal wasn't really theirs as the Galaxy's Omar Gonzales had an own goal in the 39th minute to start the scoring.
Donovan is now the league's fourth-best all-time leading scorer at 109 goals behind leader Jaime Moreno, second place Jeff Cunningham and third-best Ante Razov.
The Galaxy are 4-2-5 with 17 points, but the defending regular season Western Conference champion is now tied with FC Dallas, who now also lead the Supporters Shield race for the league's best record at 5-3-2. Los Angeles is also the defending Shield champion. Los Angeles will face Chivas USA in their first SuperClasico meeting of 2011 at The Home Depot Center, their shared home pitch, Saturday.
Kansas City, on a league-record 10-game road trip to start the season while LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is made ready for its 2011 debut, are 1-4-4 with four points in the Eastern Conference. They will travel to the Seattle Sounders Saturday.
