Mariano Trujillo's unassisted goal in the 85th minute gave Chivas USA their first win of the 2011 Major League Soccer season as they edged the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.
Reigning league Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski put San Jose up 1-0 in the 16th minute with help from Khari Stephenson and Ramiro Corrales, but Chivas countered in first-half stoppage time when Heath Pierce connected with Alejandro Moreno.
Chivas is now 1-2-3 with six points and are, at the moment, tied for sixth place in the Western Conference standings with the Vancouver Whitecaps (same record), who host FC Dallas later Saturday at Empire Field. Chivas next hosts the New England Revolution next Saturday.
San Jose fell to 1-3-2 with five points, putting them in eighth place in the conference. The Earthquakes head to the Philadelphia Union next Saturday.
