Timbers Sign First Designated Player In Midfielder Diego Chara

Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers announced the first signing of a Designated Player to their roster Wednesday in midfielder Diego Chara, who comes from Deportes Tolima, a first division team from Colombia.

He has scored two goals in the team's first nine games of the 2011 season and the club leads Liga Postobon in scoring the first 11 games of the 2011 Apertura season with 23.

In 2010, Chara played in a team-high 42 games and helped score some of their league-best 88 goals, leading them to a first place finish in their division.

He also assisted on a goal in a 2-0 win over Corinthians of Brazil in the 2011 Copa Libertadores tournament, where he played in seven games.
