Maicon Santos had two of Toronto FC's three goals, with Alan Gordon scoring the final one, as the Major League Soccer franchise took a 1-0 lead over FC Edmonton of the North American Soccer league in the first leg Wednesday of the 2011 Nutrilite Canadian Championship at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, which determines who will represent Canada in the field for the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League.
The tournament was once a round-robin event, with MLS' Toronto, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Montreal Impact, at the time in either USL First Division or the USSF Division 2 Pro League, playing for the Voyageurs Cup, but the event added Edmonton to allow for a new format, in which winners of two aggregate-goal semifinal matchups will face off in a similarly-run final for the championship.
Game 2 of the Toronto-Edmonton series will be May 4 at BMO Field in Toronto
