Despite losing on the road to Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa 2-1 Tuesday in San Jose, Costa Rica, Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake made history by becoming the first MLS team to reach the championship final of the CONCACAF Champions League by winning the aggregate series 3-2 after playing to a 2-0 victory last Tuesday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
After a scoreless first half in San Jose, Luis Diego Cordero needed a few seconds of the opening minute to take the early lead in the second leg game, which was countered by Jamison Olave when he converted a 61st minute corner kick.
Alonso Solis scored on an 87th minute penalty kick for the final goal, but it was not enough for the Central America team to earn a spot in the final.
RSL will travel to the winner of the other semifinal series, an all-Mexican Primera Division matchup between Cruz Azul and Monterrey, who leads the aggregate score series 2-1, April 20, then host the second leg of the championship series April 27.
