MLS Hits Mullin With 10-Game Suspension, $5,000 Fine For Zakuani Incident

Already hit with an automatic one-game suspension and a $250 fine, Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee announced Wednesday it was issuing a additional nine-game suspension and a $5,000 fine against Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullin for a vicious tackle on Seattle Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani during last Saturday's 1-0 victory that caused Zakuani to suffer a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg, requiring surgery.

The penalty is the harshest handed out by MLS since 2007 when former Houston Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark was suspended for 10 games and fined $10,000 for kicking former FC Dallas and current Philadelphia Union forward Carlos Ruiz.

The Disciplinary Committee, who reviews all penalties issued during every league game and has the power to enhance or reduce any fine or caution, called Mullin's action "reckless, egregious and showed utter disregard for the safety of an opponent".

Mullin will be able to return to the Rapids for their June 26 game at the Columbus Crew.
