The Puerto Rico Islanders of the North American Soccer League announced the signings Thursday of goalkeeper Richard Smith and midfielder/forward Jarad vanSchalk.
Smith spent several years playing in his native England, including two seasons with Manchester City of the English Premier League. He began his professional career at Brighton & Hove Albion FC in Football League One and last played for the league's Yeovil Town FC.
VanSchalk was a two-time All-West Coast Conference First Team selection during his four seasons at the University of Portland, where he started 70 of 77 games and finished with 14 goals and 14 assists for 40 points.
The Islanders open the NASL season on the road Saturday against the Carolina RailHawks.
