Terry Dunfield fired off a goal in the second half as the Vancouver Whitecaps shut out the Montreal Impact 1-0 in the first leg of the 2011 Nutrilite Canadian Championship semifinal series Wednesday at Saputo Stadium in Montreal in a battle of Major League Soccer franchises.
The annual tournament, once a three-team, round-robin affair between the Whitecaps and Impact -- then in USL First Division -- and MLS' Toronto FC, is now a four-team event with the addition of North American Soccer League franchise FC Edmonton, with the winner earning the chance to represent Canada in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League field.
This year, the four teams will play in a pair of two-game, aggregate-goal semfinals with the winners facing off in a similar final series for the berth.
Game 2 of the Vancouver-Montreal series will be next Wednesday at Empire Field in Vancouver.
