The Vancouver Whitecaps, making their debut this season in Major League Soccer, announced Wednesday defender Jay DeMerit will be the team's 20th captain in franchise history.
DeMerit previously wore the captain's armband for Watford FC of the English League Championship and English Premier League.
He also has made 23 appearances for the US Men's National Team, including stints on their 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup-winning and 2010 FIFA World Cup-qualifying team.
The team also named midfielders Terry Dunfield and John Thorrington as alternate captains.
Dunfield joined the Whitecaps last August in the USSF Division 2 Pro League after playing 14 years in England.
Thorrington, a former youth player in the Manchester United system and who had stints playing in Germany and England, spent the last six seasons with the Chicago Fire.
