US Women Claim Eighth Overall Algarve Cup Title Over Iceland

For the eighth time in nine opportunities, the US Women's National Team won the 2011 Algarve Cup tournament in Faro, Portugal with a 4-2 win over Iceland to ensure they will remain the world's top-ranked women's team when FIFA released its first poll results of 2011 March 18.

The US were also the tournament's defending champion.

Carli Lloyd opened the scoring for the US off an Any Rodriguez assist in the 10th minute, but Iceland stormed to a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal by Marget Vidarsdottir in the 26th minute and a goal by Hallberg Gisladottir via Katrin Omarsdottir two minutes later.

Megan Rapinoe assisted Lauren Cheney on a game-tying in the first minute of first half stoppage time, then poured it on in the second half as Shannon Boxx fed a pass to Heather O'Reilly in the 55th minute and Abby Wambach connected with Alex Morgan in the 87th for the final goal.

The USWNT will next play England in a friendly April 2 in London.
