Timbers Sign Lopez, Taylor, Thompson To Roster

The Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer announced the signings Thursday of midfielder Rodrigo Lopez, defender Chris Taylor and forward Spencer Thompson.

Lopez played a combined 23 regular season games for the Timbers' 2009 USL First Division team and their 2010 USSF Division 2 Pro League team. He was first signed by Chivas USA in 2005 at age 18 and had one assist over eight games from 2005 to 2007. Lopez also played for the Ventura County Fusion in the USL Premier Development League and Zapotlanejo in Mexico.

Taylor, a four-time All-Conference USA player at the University of Tulsa, led the Golden Hurricane to four straight NCAA College Cup appearances and finished his career with eight goals and 17 assists in 82 career games.

Thompson left UC-Irvine as the fifth-highest career goal scorer with 25 to go with 17 assists in 78 regular season games. A three-time All-Big West Conference selection, he was placed on the Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy in his senior season.
