Timbers Sign Colombian Perlaza

Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers signed Colombian-born forward Jorge Perlaza, who spent the last four seasons with Deportes Tolima in their first division, to a 2011 contract Monday.

He had 15 goals in 31 games last season for Tolima, leading them to first place in Liga Postobon and qualifying them for the 2011 Copa Libertadores tournament. Perlaza also scored a goal over five starts in the 2010 Copa Sudamericana, leading them to the quarterfinals. Over his four seasons there, he had 28 goals in 135 games.

In 2009, he scored eight goals for them, contributing to a first place finish in the Apetura tournament and a second place overall finish.

At the 2010 Finalizacion tournament, his 10 goals put his name among the top scorers in the league in the second half of the season.

He began his career in 2001 with Atletico Huila, then joined Deportes Quindio (2002, 2004-06), Deportivo Pasto (2002-03) and Tolima (2007-10), scoring 39 goals in a combined 212 games.

Perlaza played for Deportivo Pasto in the 2003 Copa Sudamericana and took Tolina to the 2007 Copa Libertadores.

In 2006 at Quindio, he had eight goals in 26 games, signing with Tolima the next season.
