Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers announced Friday midfielder Jack Jewsbury will be their captain for the 2011 season, which starts for them March 19 when they travel to face the defending MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids.
Jewsbury was acquired in a March 1 trade with Sporting Kansas City, who drafted him in 2003 and where he had 15 goals and 21 assists in 195 regular season games over eight seasons.
In 2004, he was on the ex-Kansas City Wizards team that won the Western Conference championship title, lost that season's MLS Cup title game, but would also win the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
He reached career highs in 2008 in assists (seven) and points (13) and was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. In 2009, he was ranked among the team's assist leaders with five.
